Enchantment By Any Other Name

duelseadragonsAlright, Thunderheads. So Christmas is almost over, New Year’s is right on its heels, and I was thinking… Any of you out there in the blogsphere ever go swimming in the bioluminscent waters of mi isla — otherwise known as Boriquen, aka, the enchanted Caribbean island of Puerto Rico?? Well, if you haven’t let me be the first to tell you that you should. In fact, make sure that you add it on your bucket list as a must do! Trust me; you’ll thank me. And for those of you who have, well, you’ll understand…

My own personal experience goes back quite a few years now. Geesh! Was I really fifteen then?? I guess I was. Well I tell ya, fifteen or not, the glow of those warm evening waters feels like yesterday. I remember getting out of that rinky-dink skiff, thinking, “Oh hell no! I’m not swimming in that!” You see, at first glance, the waters were as dark as mud — pitch black — and I instantly had visions of Jaws breaking through the churn, gripping me in its mouth and chomping me into chum. I know…not a pretty picture. Nevertheless, it’s exactly that picture that I want you to hold in your head, because it was that picture that nearly robbed me from being able to hold dear one of the most enchanted moments of my life.

All I gotta say is thank God for my tour guide. Let’s just say he wasn’t taking “No!” for an answer. He insisted that I jump, probably would have thrown me in if I hadn’t. What I feared, he stirred. And in that stirring I, well, I saw, didn’t I? The dark wasn’t dark, it was teeming with light the result of life. I was instantly surrounded by what I was told existed but never knew for myself. Scientist call them dinoflagellates, and they say that over 750,000 of these tiny critters float in every gallon of those Puerto Rican waters. One touch and they glow — NEON GREEN — a 100 times bigger than their own microscopic bodies. It’s indescribable. Disney wishes it was this good. I don’t care what anyone says. A picture may paint a thousand words, but it pales in comparison to being there and experiencing the real thing! And they say magic doesn’t exist in our world. Bah! Curmudgeons! Wonderment invades everything around us. How can it not when the very MAKER OF ALL THINGS has wonderment running through His veins??
